Zagreb: The Perfect Summer Alternative in Croatia

When you think about Croatia, the first thing that probably comes to mind is the beautiful Adriatic coast, its ancient cities, vibrant culture, clean sea and beaches. But, Croatia, with its geographical and cultural variety, has much more to offer than the sun, sea and sand.

A few hours up north or east, depending where on the coast your are, lies Central Croatia, a region of expansive green valleys, wide and slow rivers, hills with lush forests that hide small villages and medieval fortresses. In the centre of it lies Zagreb, the country’s capital and largest city. Often overlooked because of the more popular Split and Dubrovnik, with its medieval and Habsburg heritage (think of Vienna and Budapest), slower summer days and abundance of green, it is a perfect choice for all who would like to have a different summer experience of Croatia.

1. The Second Greenest European Capital

European Environment Agency recognised Zagreb as the second greenest capital in Europe with  74% of infrastructure consisting of green spaces. Whether you are sightseeing the historical centre or spending your time outside of it, there is always a green area around you. From the famous Green Horseshoe in the Lower Town, the park-forest Tuškanac behind the medieval villages of Gradec and Kaptol, to the parks outside of the centre, like Maksimir and Bundek—everywhere you look, there is a place to find shelter from summer heat, fill your lungs with oxygen and just enjoy the nature around you.

2. No Crowds

Summer is vacation season in Croatia. Starting at the end of June, the streets of Zagreb are less crowded because everyone is enjoying their time off elsewhere. If you dislike crowded places combined with high temperatures, Zagreb is a perfect choice for you.

3. Open All Day Long

Siesta is not part of Zagreb’s culture. The stores, bars, cafés, pastry shops and museums are open all day long, except on Sundays. If the heat gets to be too much, there are many places where you can get a refreshment and wait until the temperatures drop.

4. A Rich Summer Cultural Programme

Throughout the summer months there are many events organised in Zagreb, from open-air concerts like Zagreb Classic and music festivals, to food festivals with lots of great food, drinks and live music, as well as, free dancing classes for citizens and tourist alike. Check out the Zagreb Tourist Board’s webpage to get information on upcoming events.

5. At the Foot of a Mountain

Apart from having many parks, Zagreb is located at the foot of Mount Medvednica, one of Croatia’s nature parks and Zagreb’s favourite hiking destination. Just a 15-minute ride away from the historical centre, Medvednica has many marked hiking trails, restaurants with traditional food, and a wonderful view from its highest point, Sljeme. While you are there, visit the medieval fortress, Medvedgrad, and learn about the history and natural life of this area.

6. A Perfect Day-Trip Hub

After a few days in Zagreb, you might like to see what else Croatia has to offer. From medieval fortresses and castles up north, local wine and food tasting family businesses, national parks or the Adriatic sea—everyting is just an hour or two away. Zagreb can be a great base for full-day excursions to many nearby destinations.

Zagreb has something for everyone, and you can spend days exploring its streets, restaurants, cafeterias, squares, museums and parks, but the best way to do it is with a local guide. Do not miss the opportunity to discover the secrets that only locals can tell you and dive deep into its vibrant culture.
